Discours Direct – Direct Speech

Direct speech is nothing but conveying the exact words that a person said. It is usually enclosed in quotation marks (“ ”) or may be enclosed in guillemet (<< >>)

Verbs like dire(to say), demander(to ask), and penser(to think) are mostly used in direct speech.

Merlin dit: << J’aime les pommes>>

(Marlin says,”I like apples”)

Paul répond:<< Lia les déteste>>

(Paul replies,”Lia hates them”)

Inversion is required while using a short clause to neutralize the speech.

<< Avez-vous un stylo?>> elle a demandé

( “do you have a pen?” she asked.)

Discours Indirect – Indirect Speech

Indirect speech is reporting what the person has said but not using the exact words. It is just closed by full stop. No quotation or guillemet is used. The subordinate clause should start with “que” .

Liya declare que Lisa est stupide.

(Liya declares that Lisa is stupid)
