Pronom – Pronoun
Pronouns are nothing but the substitutes for nouns. There are different types of pronouns . There are also 2 major categories. They are:
- En pronoun
- Y pronoun
EN pronoun:
The “EN” replaces the supplements introduced by the prepositions “de”.
It can be:
A place where we come from:
Ex: vas-tu au cinema? Non, j’en reviens.
[ Are you going to the movie? No, I come back]
A quantity introduced by a partitive article:
Ex: Veux-tu du gateau? Oui, j’en veux une petite part.
[Would you to have some cake? Yes, I want a little piece.]
A quantity introduced by an adverb of quantity:
Ex: Combien as-tu de tickets? J’en ai pas beaucoup.
[How many tickets do you have? I don’t have many]
A verb which constructs itself with “de”:
Ex: Êtes-vous heureux de votre nouvel ordinateur? Oui, j’en suis contente.
[Are you happy with your new computer? Yes, I am happy about it.]
En pronoun can replace an complement object direct prefixed by “un”/”une”:
Ex: Michael a un frère = il en a un. [Michael has a brother = he has one]
Y Pronoun:
The pronoun “Y” replaces a noun or a group of nouns introduced by “à, au, à la, à l’, aux”.
They can be:
A place:
Ex: Marcel va au bureau. Elle y va.
[Marcel goes to the office. She goes there]
A thing:
Ex: Je m’intéresse à la peinture. Je m’y intéresse.
[I am interested in painting. I am interested in them.]
”Y” can also represent as complement of a place introduced by prepositions like “sur, sous, dehors, etc..”
Ex: La bouteille est sous la chaise. Il y est.
[The bottle is under the chair. It’s there]
Le chat est sur le mûr. Il y est.
[The cat is on the wall.]
